Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, NY, and Suneel Kodambaka, assistant professor in the UCLA Department of Materials Science and Engineering.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Whereas conventional transistors made on a flat, horizontal piece of silicon, the silicon nano wires "to grow" vertically. Because of the vertical structure, they have a smaller footprint, which could allow for more transistors fit on an integrated circuit, or chip, Stach said.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"But first we need to learn how to create a demanding standard for nano wire before the industry can start using them to produce transistors," he said.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Nanowires may allow engineers to solve a problem threatening to derail the electronics industry. The new technology will be needed for industry to keep Moore's law, an unofficial rule that states that the number of transistors on a computer chip doubles about every 18 months, resulted in rapid advances in computers and telecommunications. Doubling the number of devices that can fit in a computer chip translates into a similar improvement in performance.
